Expansive mortar is a powerful, non-explosive solution for breaking concrete and rocks quietly and safely. Whether you're removing boulders, demolishing concrete foundations, or quarrying natural stone, expansive mortar offers a reliable alternative to traditional blasting methods. In this article, we’ll guide you through the correct steps to use expansive mortar efficiently and effectively.
Before applying expansive mortar, make sure you have the following equipment and tools:
A hammer drill with the appropriate diameter drill bit
Safety goggles, gloves, and a dust mask
A clean mixing bucket
A mixing stick or drill mixer
Water (preferably cold)
Measuring tools
Expansive mortar (like SUPERDRILL brand)
Use a hammer drill to make holes in the rock or concrete. The pattern and size of the holes depend on the type and size of the material you're breaking.
Hole Diameter: Usually 30mm to 40mm
Hole Depth: 80% to 90% of the material thickness
Spacing Between Holes: 10 to 40 cm depending on the material hardness
Tip: The holes should be clean and free of debris before applying mortar.
In a clean bucket, pour the expansive mortar slowly into water while stirring continuously. Follow the ratio instructions from the manufacturer—usually about 3 parts powder to 1 part water by weight.
Mixing Tips:
Use cold water to delay premature expansion
Stir for 2–3 minutes until the mixture is smooth and lump-free
Do not remix or reuse after it starts to harden
Immediately after mixing, carefully pour or funnel the mortar into each hole. Fill each hole up to the top, and make sure the mortar stays level to maximize pressure.
Do not overfill. Expansion starts within 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on temperature.
The expansive mortar will gradually generate high internal pressure and cause the rock or concrete to crack. This usually happens between 2 to 12 hours after application, depending on the ambient temperature and material density.
Cracking Time (estimates):
Hot climates: 2–4 hours
Mild climates: 4–8 hours
Cold climates: 8–12 hours
Do not attempt to speed up the reaction by applying heat. Let the process complete naturally.
After the cracks appear, use a pry bar, pickaxe, or excavator to remove the broken chunks. You’ll find the material separates easily along the fracture lines.
Always wear protective gear
Do not look directly into holes during reaction
Avoid standing near filled holes while cracking is occurring
Store unused mortar in a dry, cool place
